Abstract

The following work exposes the application of Nightmare Exposure, Relaxation and Rewriting Therapy (ERRT) in a case of a 25-year-old girl with a previous diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. After the evaluation, a diagnosis was made of a moderate subacute nightmare disorder and a circadian rhythm disorder of secondary sleep-wakefulness, of episodic delayed phases, characterized by two types of recurrent nightmares. The intervention was divided into four weekly sessions and five follow-up sessions. The results of this case show that applying the components of the ERRT developed by Davis (2009) on idiopathic nightmares is effective. The client only once experienced the nightmare after the intervention and, in addition, these successful results were generalized from one nightmare to another. Therefore, the results suggest that rewriting the nightmare based on vulnerability issues is effective in both idiopathic and traumatic nightmares.
