Abstract

Spirituality/religiosity, as factors of verbal regulation, influence the way a person behaves. This research analyzes how both variables interact with self-efficacy and optimism in university students. A total of 121 men and 198 women university students participated, with an average age of 22.63 years (SD = 2.834). Spirituality was assessed by the Beliefs and Values Scale, atheism by the Rejection of Christianity Scale, general self-efficacy by the General Self-Efficacy Scale and optimism by the Life Orientation Test. The results indicate that after performing a linear regression the scores in atheism would show an explanatory capacity of 22.7% over the variance in the general self-efficacy reflected by the students; however, the contribution made by spirituality is not significant. Nevertheless, it is optimism that maintains the greatest explanatory capacity (β = .401). Taking the total score of optimism as a dependent variable, both spirituality and atheism make a negative and not significant contribution, being explained by the general self-efficacy in 40.9% of its variance; the number of religious acts attended during a month would explain 13% of the obtained variance.
