Abstract

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous disorder approached from multiple hypotheses. The literature that studies it anatomically offers disparate results. We present a systematic review focused on the last two decades according to PRISMA guidelines. Searches were made in the Pubmed, Scoop, Web of Science and Scielo databases. 32 meta-analyses and 10 clinical trials were selected. Schizophrenia is revealed as a multiple and biologically difficult entity to explain. Many investigations coincide in the presence of loss of gray matter, white matter, increase in the size of the ventricles and functional alterations of the hippocampus. The study of alterations in other brain structures is the subject of strong controversies. The need to expand knowledge and incorporate the perspective of brain networks is still necessary to clarify whether we are facing a single diagnostic entity with various subtypes or a conglomeration of different alterations.
