Abstract

The development of any discipline, in our case of psychology, one must examine immersed in the socio-historical context in which it occurs. The theories and practices developed respond to ideologies, needs and aspirations of both the time the emergence and eventual growth or death. Therefore, in this paper we describe the state of psychology in Puerto Rico by placing it in the historical context of our country and the development of training instances. Describe the level of training in Puerto Rico, systems of quality assessment, professional psychology, socio-demographic characteristics of the psychologists on the island and the organizations that represent them. Finally, we will try to define the challenges ahead and the challenges facing the discipline as a science and profession.
