Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of burnout in professionals of human services of Chile. The sample consisted of 393 Chilean professionals (29.52% service professional workers, and 70.48 % employees working with disabled people). Burnout was evaluated by the
“Spanish Burnout Inventory” (SBI). This instrument contains 20 items distributed into four dimensions called: Enthusiasm toward the job (5 items) (α = .82), Psychological exhaustion (4 items) (α = .83), Indolence (6 items) (α = .75), and Guilt (5 items) (α = .73). 20 participants (5.09%) showed low levels of Enthusiasm toward the job, and high levels of Psychological exhaustion and Indolence. Taking into consideration the global score on the SBI we conclude that 5 participants (1.27%) showed severe burnout, because they showed high frequency levels on the global score of the SBI, and high feelings of guilt
