Abstract

Hospitalization is a stressing event for children. This is due to the coincidence with situations that generate emotional and behavioural alterations, helping to live them as a negative experience. Psychology and other disciplines have been carrying out interventions to reduce the impact of hospitalization in paediatric patients through out programmes and actions designed to prepare children to overcome this situation.

Despite enough experimental evidence afirming the effectiveness of child preparation programmes, for both hospitalization and medical procedures, the fact is that both of them have a low implementation within hospital routines. This is specially due to practical reasons such as lack of human and economic resources or insufficient training for health-care professionals on this subject.

The present paper reviews the procedures normally included in the psychological preparation programmes for paediatric hospitalization: information, training on coping abilities, filming applications and play roles, etc., highlighting the main characteristics of its application within the hospital field. Besides, this paper tackles the role of clowns as an innovative form of intervention with hospitalized children.
