Abstract

Objectives: We examined the relationships among health-related quality of life (HRQL), anxiety and depression in patients with high grade glioma. Design: Transversal, descriptive and correlational. Participants:  Twenty-nine patients admitted to the Neurosurgery Service of the Hospital General Universitario of Valencia with a tentative diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme. Results: Significant differences have been detected in the levels of anxiety according to the level of emotional and social functioning. Specifically, those patients that presented higher levels in emotional and social dimensions of the EORTC-qlq 30 questionnaire presented lower levels of anxiety. Conclusions: The Emotional Functioning dimension of EORTC-qlq c30 predominantly assesses anxiety. This implies a risk of under diagnosed depression, if the EORTC-qlq c30 is used as the only instrument to screen for psychological distress in cancer patients. As depression has a stronger impact on global QL of cancer patients than anxiety, the use of an additional instrument is recommended for assessment of depression.
