Abstract

Human Beings need afectivity and intimacy to keep their psicological and emotional balance, as these needs are inherent to human nature. Every institution for the mentally retarded people comitted to quality of life of the persons who live there, should regard this aim. Since integration, normalization and self-determination are the guide principles to achieve quality of life, they are applicable to the treatment of intimacy, privacy and sexual expressions inside the institutions.

First we analyse how sexual development in non-normalised contexts, causes  non-adaptive expressions of sexuality and afectivity. Then we present the approach set up in IVADIS, in which the above remarked principles, become the guide for the promotion of sexual health.
