Abstract

In the next article we examine a case of compulsive overeating (or binge eating disorder) associated with depression. The patient is an obese 29 years old woman who suffers from a lack of energy, apathy to engage in daily activities and an excessive uncontrolled ingestion of high-calorie foods.

The methods and procedures applied during the assessment and treatment will be explained, as will the taking of therapeutic decisions and the most significant therapeutic techniques used.

Our interest in this case resides in the functional interaction between compulsive overeating and negative emotional states, which become a vicious circle. While binging is used to alleviate melancholy in the short term, it triggers a medium -and longterm increase in sadness, leading the subject to resort back to the binge to control the emotional state.
