Abstract

The last thirty years have witnessed a large increase in research and development of models and techniques for the treatment of chronic mental disease.

We define Psycho-social Rehabilitation as a set of strategies, methods and resources aimed to improving the abilities and autonomy of people with chronic mental disease, reducing their social handicaps and optimizing their quality of life. This is a long, flexible, individualized and holistic process addressed to the patient,  his/her family and the environment.

From 1995 to 2000 we developed in Aldaia (Valencia, Spain) a complex program for Rehabilitation and socio-laboral reintegration for people with chronic mental disease: Programs Albanta and Agora. During the 60 months the program expanded, 180 people and their families were taken care of, and we could verify a statistically significant improvement in their psychosocial operation
and quality of life.
