Abstract

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), label which some experts want to change for DSM-5, is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders, with a life prevalence of 2.8%. Despite its high frequency GAD is still little known,  because until 1980 it was not considered as an independent clinical category, and because research on GAD is not yet as much as on others psychological disorders. Nevertheless situation is changing and cognitive and emotional processes related to this disorder are been discovered by an increasing  number of specialized researchers. Objective. The main purpose of this work was to synthesize actual knowledge about diagnostic criteria, theoretical  perspectives, assessment tools and treatment advances on GAD.
