Abstract

One of the frequently asked questions that often appear in the mass media is how the economic crisis affects spending on gambling and if this causes pathological gambling. To try to answer this question we analyzed the relationship between GDP and spending on major games operated by the LAE and companies in the sector. It is noted that the growing trend of spending on gambling in Spain was cut short for the first time in 2008, coinciding with the global economic crisis in developed countries. Until that time (except for a slight decline in 2001, which was offset the next year), growth in spending on gambling had maintained a sustained and steady growth since 1995.

The results indicate a positive linear relationship between GDP and some  games. Nevertheless, there is no relationship between GDP and other games, or it is not linear. Results are discussed in terms of the prevalence of pathological gamblers in different types of game.
