Abstract

Facing the cognitive losses that can accompany aging, three concepts emerge: compensation, cognitive reserve and learning potential which are presented as adaptive forms to halt the deterioration. The objective of this research is to analyze the characteristics of their measures, study the relationship between these variables and check for potential differences in learning and compensation strategies based on two groups: high and low cognitive reserve. The study included 96 subjects with a mean age of 73,23, which were assessed with an extensive battery of neuropsychological tests. We confirmed the structure of MCQ, developed a measure of cognitive reserve and was estimated the learning potential of the participants. We obtained significant and positive relationships between the measures studied, and differences were found between the groups with high and low reserves. We conclude that there is a relationship between the variables and that subjects with high cognitive reserve apply alternative strategies and effective of  compensation that provide a greater learning potential permitting greater adaptability.
