Abstract

Health personnel are considered to be a group with a high risk of suffering from mental disorders, with or without addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs. Within this group, physicians stand out because of their responsibility for the health of the population in general and that of their patients in particular, and because they are, themselves, patients who are especially difficult to treat.

PAIME is a programme created jointly by the 4 Medical Councils of Catalonia and its Autonomous Government (Generalitat) devoted specifically to treating sick physicians in a specialised and confidential manner, within a framework of a commitment between the sick doctor, his/her psychiatrist and his/her Medical Council, which, in the last analysis, authorises him/her to practise medicine.

This kind of programme is quite common in the U.S., Canada and Australia; in some countries of Europe, however, they have barely become aware of the problem. The experience that is exposed here is a pioneering one in our continent and should be a
first step towards truly healing the healers.
